Background of the Study
International language standards, established by global organizations and linguistic research bodies, serve to guide language use in formal and semi-formal contexts. Nigerian Pidgin, historically an informal means of communication, is increasingly entering the realm of online journalism. As digital media platforms gain prominence worldwide, there is a growing demand for clarity, consistency, and credibility in journalistic discourse. Online journalists now face pressure to align with international standards while retaining the unique expressive qualities of Nigerian Pidgin. Recent initiatives by international linguistic associations have introduced norms for grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, which may influence journalistic practices (Adetola, 2023). These standards have the potential to enhance readability and professional recognition, but they also raise concerns about eroding the colloquial charm and flexibility that characterize Nigerian Pidgin. This study examines how international language standards affect Nigerian Pidgin usage in online journalism, exploring whether standardization enhances journalistic credibility or diminishes the language’s dynamic, culturally embedded features. The research considers the interplay between global norms and local linguistic identity, assessing the implications for media practitioners and audiences alike (Okeke, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite international pressure for language standardization, Nigerian Pidgin in online journalism remains fluid and regionally diverse. Journalists often struggle to reconcile the need for standard language practices with the inherent creativity and adaptability of Pidgin. This discrepancy creates challenges in ensuring message clarity while preserving cultural authenticity. Furthermore, the lack of consensus on a standardized form results in inconsistencies that may affect audience trust and media credibility. The study seeks to address these issues by investigating how international language standards are influencing Nigerian Pidgin in online journalism and identifying the potential trade-offs between standardization and linguistic vibrancy (Adetola, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the extent to which international language standards are adopted in Nigerian Pidgin online journalism.

  • To examine the impact of standardization on journalistic clarity and audience perception.

  • To explore the balance between global norms and local linguistic identity in media contexts.

Research Questions

  • How are international language standards influencing Nigerian Pidgin usage in online journalism?

  • What effect does standardization have on audience trust and readability?

  • How can media practitioners balance standardization with cultural authenticity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the challenges and benefits of applying international language standards to Nigerian Pidgin in online journalism. The findings will inform media practitioners, language planners, and policymakers by identifying best practices that enhance journalistic quality while preserving linguistic uniqueness. This balance is crucial for maintaining the cultural relevance of Nigerian Pidgin in a globalized media landscape (Adetola, 2023; Okeke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Nigerian Pidgin usage in online journalism and does not cover traditional print media or offline communication contexts.
